The Queen of Denmark, her holiness Queen Magrethe II, Denmark's Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and climate and energy minister Martin Lidegaard Wednesday opened Anholt offshore wind farm which with 400 megatwatts (MW) generating capacity, is nearly twice as large as Denmark's previously biggest Horns Rev II which has a generating capacity of 207 MW.
At 11am local time The Queen pressed the magic button declaring the wind farm officially open, though the last turbine was actually erected and connected to the grid in June.
It's estimated it will produce enough electricity for 400.000 households equalling 4% of Denmark's electricity usage.
The wind farm is placed by the Danish island Anholt which is situated between mainland Denmark and Sweden and takes up four times as much space as the island and on a clear day it will be visible from land, furthermore the ferry route between Grenaa in Jutland (mainland Denmark) and Anholt will go close by the wind turbines, so there will be plenty of opportunities for wind energy enthusiasts to get a proper look.
Denmark has some of the worlds most ambitious targets for CO2 reductions and renewable energy generation and aims to be fossil fuel free by 2050.
